Week 7-Podcast Review

As technology continues to advance, so should the educational experiences we provide our students. As with teaching in any area, being an ESL teacher has its struggles. As English language learners need to be provided with learning experiences featuring accommodations and creativity. This is due to the manner in which ELL's are able to learn a new language best. Providing ELL's with many opportunities to learn from visual and audio resources. Podcasts are a great teaching tool in the sense that it provides students with an audio clip in which to listen and gain understanding of a specific topic being addressed. As society becomes more and more aware of the needs of our English language learners, we can also find more resources such as Podcasts geared towards both ELL's and their teachers. As a result I searched for available Podcasts such as these, to review in order to identify quality Podcasts for ESL teachers to implement in their classrooms and direct instruction.
As I began my search for Podcasts I came across three in particular that caught my attention, "Voices of ESL" by Lee Chen, "Culips ESL Podcast" by Learn English Naturally, and "English Grammar HELP and Podcasts for the Inquisitive ESL Student: We're Interactive!" by ESL HELP! Desk. Each of these podcasts are geared towards English language learners. They each promote second language acquisition as well as our students knowledge and use of technology.

"Voices of ESL" by Lee Chen is a podcast in which a group of students from Palomar College who are English language learners each take turns discussing there thoughts, ideas, and personal experiences surrounding a specific topic/theme. The purpose of these podcasts is to encourage ELL's to gain confidence in their use of English. As well as to allow ESL educators the ability to promote this growth in their students. As students have the ability to create some connections with other ELL's who once experienced the same struggles as themselves. In doing so they will gain a sense of motivation to continue to work hard in their journey to acquiring the English language.

The "Culips ESL Podcast" by Learn English Naturally podcast is designed as a teaching tool for English language learners. It was developed in order to teach ELL's the ability to speak in English naturally through conversation. This can be a difficult task and skill for ELL students to acquire, making it beneficial for students to gain practice whenever possible. This podcast focuses on teaching ELL students proper comprehension, expression, fluency, and vocabulary of the English language. It can be a useful tool to implement within the classroom environment for students to utilize independently.

Lastly, the "English Grammar HELP and Podcasts for the Inquisitive ESL Student: We're Interactive!" by ESL HELP! Desk podcast focuses on English grammar. Learning a second language is a difficult task in of itself in terms of speaking, listening, reading and writing. However, as students continue to acquire the language and work on their fluency, they must also learn proper grammar in terms of this new language. This podcast provides ELL students with instructional support in teaching English grammar through audio stories as well as explicit instruction. This podcast can also be a helpful tool for ESL teachers to implement throughout direct instruction of their ELL students as well as to allow students to independently listen to stories to gain the knowledge.

As a future ESL educator, I enjoyed researching, listening, and reviewing these podcasts. It was interesting for me to learn how informative they can as well as how they can be implemented in the learning environment. This is great way to incorporate technology into the ESL classroom as a way to promote it's use among our second language learners as well as to strengthen their language acquisition. I would personally implement the use of podcasts in my instruction, specifically the three in which I reviewed in this blog. I hope that as an ESL educator you too find this review to be useful.
